How to choose a surf holiday

If this is your first holiday then the sheer amount of destinations to choose from can be daunting.

Of course, most people book their first surf trip based on the recommendations of friends or family. If, however, you prefer to make up your own mind, here are some factors to consider:

What type of surf experience are you seeking?

Do you want a fully-catered surf experience where everything is sorted for you? Are you more interested in surfing as much as possible or do you also want to party? Is it warm water you desire or does cold water not phase you?

There are many different types of surf trip experiences out there. At Southwest Surf House, for example, we look after the majority of your meals, arrange surf lessons and provide boutique accommodation, which means you can focus on learning to surf and making epic memories. Other places, however, may be more about surf, surf and surf again with little else to do.

Really, the type of surf experience you book comes back to what you want to get out of it. Do you want a more balanced learn-to-surf experience that's both challenging and relaxing? Or are you happy to enjoy a stripped-back surf trip with the focus being solely on the waves?

What's your budget?

The next thing to consider is your budget. Remember, when it comes to surf holidays Europe is a large continent with a wide range of prices.

Some destinations suit the budget-conscious. Others come with all the bells and whistles, which means you'll need to fork out if you want to stay. The main thing to remember is that surf holidays don't have to be expensive. With a little research, you can find awesome deals that won't break the bank.

Our advice is to choose surf holidays in Europe that offer package deals. This means everything from your food to your transport, activities, equipment and accommodation is taken care of.

By going down this route, you can save money on things like eating out, fuel and gear hire, which means more money for flights (or more cash for an epic night out).

Are you travelling solo or with friends?

Finally, it's important to consider whether you're travelling solo or with friends.

Travelling solo gives you more flexibility over where and when you want to go. You can also surf as much or as little as you want without having to worry about coordinating with others. On the downside, surf holidays can be more expensive when travelling solo as you'll need to take care of everything yourself.

If you're travelling with friends, on the other hand, you can share the cost of things like transport and you might even be able to score a sweet group rate. This means surf holidays are more affordable but you'll need to be on the same page when it comes to your itinerary.

After all, it's no fun being stuck in a surf camp with friends who only want to hit the town every night!

Which country is right for me?

Now that you've got a better idea as to the type of surf holiday in Europe you're after, it's time to start thinking about which country is right for you.

Just bear in mind that this is a personal choice. While someone might rave about a certain destination, another person might not be so thrilled. The best thing though is that everything in Europe is relatively close.

You don't need to fly overnight or travel long distances to sample these destinations. With that in mind, pick a couple that speak to you and do your research.

Trust us, surf holidays in Europe are some of the best in the world!

Hossegor, France - The ultimate summer surf trip for beginners seeking warm water and chill vibes

Perfect for: Beginners seeking a fun, exciting and stress-free learn to surf experience

Not for you: If you fear baguettes and seniors rocking almost zero clothing on the beach

Our number one pick for the best surf holiday in Europe? Well... call us bias, but we can't go past Hossegor!

Located in the southwest of France, Hossegor is a surfers' paradise and home to some of the best surf zones in Europe. There are multiple beginner-friendly beaches in Hossegor to choose from, lots of bars and cafes to enjoy excellent food and coffee plus a party legendary scene.

Oh... and did we mention it's one of the only beginner surf spots in continental Europe where you can enjoy 20+ degree water and walk or ride to the beach? Because that's pretty dope, too.

Canary Islands, Spain - A stunning destination with a diverse array of friendly breaks

Perfect for: Anyone craving an "overseas" surf trip and island vibes

Not for you: If surfing over rocks gives you the heebie-jeebies

Known as the Hawaii of Europe, the Canary Islands offer surfers of all levels the perfect surf holiday destination.

With its year-round warm weather and diverse range of surf spots, the Canary Islands has something for everyone. For beginners, we recommend surf spots such as Rocky Point and Famara on the island of Lanzarote. With its sheltered surf beaches and gentle waves, these spots are ideal for those just starting out.

Plus, let's not forget the totally unique landscape that's made the Canary Islands famous! Yep, this is the place to come if you're chasing surf and unique settings in equal measure.

Algarve, Portugal - A popular surf hotspot in Europe with excellent year-round weather

Perfect for: Shoestring travellers who love seafood

Not for you: If you find it impossible to say no to delicious breakfast pastries (Pastel de Nada... we're looking at you)

Ahhh the Algarve. It's for sure one of the most popular beginner surf holiday destinations in Europe. And it's not hard to see why.

With its amazing beaches, affordable cost of living and surf spots that are ideal for learners, the Algarve has everything you need for an epic surf trip. We suggest surf spots like Tonel, Arrifana and Amado - all of which offer gentle waves and plenty of space for new shredders to catch some waves.

Throw in the fact that you're only ever a hop, skip and jump away from the freshest seafood in Europe and it's easy to see why the Algarve is such a surf holiday fave!

Rossnowlagh, Ireland - A consistent beachie that's fantastic for all levels

Perfect for: People who aren't phased by cold water

Not for you: Anyone who prefers cocktails to Guinness might struggle here

Ireland may not be on every beginner's surf radar, but it's made a name for itself in recent years due to the consistent conditions and world-class surf spots. Rossnowlagh is one of our favourite surf beaches in Ireland for beginners.

While the water temperature might not be as warm as some of the other destinations on this list, Rossnowlagh more than makes up for it with its sheer beauty, cheery locals and the fact that you can surf here almost year-round.

What's more, the surf here is generally more forgiving than at some of the other top surf spots in Europe, making it ideal for beginners.

Pint, anyone?

Zarautz, Spain - Old world charm combined with a very laid-back surf scene

Perfect for: Beginners that like to surf as much as they like to eat

Not for you: If you don't like toothpicks in your food

Zarautz, Spain, is located only an hour or so from our place in Hossegor, but it's a world away in terms of surf culture. Zarautz is very laid-back, with a slower pace of life that's reflected in the surf scene here.

That being said, don't let its old-world charm fool you - Zarautz is still very much a surf town, and one that's growing in popularity with surfers from all over Europe.

The surf here is ideal for beginners, with plenty of soft waves in summer to help you practice your pop-ups. Plus, there's no shortage of surf schools here to teach you the finer points of shredding. Word of warning though, you're not going to lose weight in Zarautz (even if you’ve studied our nutrition for beginner surfers article).

Blame it on the pintxos.
